Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is an international organization that empowers businesses to establish ambitious emissions reduction targets grounded in the latest climate science. SBTi aims to expedite global corporate efforts to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050, supporting a sustainable global economy.
What are the business drivers?
Seize opportunities: Companies can capitalize on the net-zero transition by creating innovative low-carbon products or services.
Anticipate regulatory and market changes: With countries setting ambitious climate targets, adopting SBTs helps companies stay ahead of regulations and reduce transition risks.
Increase competitiveness: The shift to net-zero can enhance competitiveness by lowering energy and emissions-related costs.
Meet stakeholder expectations: Customers, investors, and employees increasingly expect robust climate targets to future-proof businesses for net-zero.
How do companies join :
Setting a science-based target is a five-step process:
Commit: Submit a letter establishing your intent to set a science-based target
Develop: Work on an emissions reduction target in line with the SBTi’s criteria using the resources developed by the initiative
Submit: Present your target to the SBTi for official validation
Communicate: Announce your target and inform your stakeholders
Disclose: Report company-wide emissions and track target progress annually
